Get to know a dog every day, today we'll learn about the Poodle.
I. Basic Information
- The Poodle, known as Poodle in English, is also known as Poodle, Poodle, and Poodle. The American Kennel Club (AKC) categorizes it as a toy dog group and subdivided it into toy, miniature and standard by body type. The Toy Poodle is less than 28 centimeters tall and weighs less than 4 kilograms; the Miniature Poodle is less than 38 centimeters tall and weighs less than 12 kilograms; and the Standard Poodle is taller than 38 centimeters and weighs more than 12 kilograms.
II. External Characteristics
- The Poodle's coat color is solid, and the hair type is divided into two types: curly type and rope type. The curly coat is thick, hard and dense, while the corded coat is pendulous. The length of the coat on each part of the body varies, with the coat on the neck, trunk, head and ears being longer. They have a rounded skull, pendulous ears with long, wide lugs, ovoid eyes, and a clipped bite. The Poodle's front feet usually have 4 to 5 toes, the hind feet are usually 4 toes, the claws are thick and blunt, and the tail is hairy.
III. Character traits
- Poodles have a gentle character, high IQ, brave and lively, responsive and easy to train. They have excellent hearing and sense of direction and are good at understanding simple language and commands. In addition, Poodles are curious, like to explore their surroundings with their noses, and have a high need for sleep. They are also good at fast and long-distance running, and like to live in groups, often chasing after food.
IV. Life Habits
- Poodles are carnivores, feeding on herbivores and rodents. Their usual fur color is yellow, brown and black mixed, living in dry open areas, collective activities when howling, digging burrows to live. The Poodle is highly favored in France and is even honored as the “national dog”. They are heat-resistant, but cold resistance is weak, so owners need to provide them with appropriate measures to keep warm in cold weather.
V. Feeding and Care
- Food and Nutrition: It is recommended to use professional dog food to feed Poodles, and also to mix and match nutrition scientifically to ensure balanced nutrition. For different types of Poodles (e.g. standard, miniature and toy), different food formulas can be provided according to their nutritional needs. For example, Standard Poodles need a large amount of amino acids and propylanilic acid to synthesize proteins, as well as sufficient minerals; the sources of nutritional supply for Miniature Poodles can include a variety of ingredients such as fish, poultry and pork.
- Vaccination and Deworming: Puppies can begin vaccinations at 42 days, and regular vaccinations and deworming treatments are required thereafter as well. The first time a Poodle gets an infectious vaccine, it should get three shots plus a rabies shot, and after that, the infectious vaccine should be given once a year, and the rabies vaccine should be given once every three years. When getting vaccinated, make sure the dog is in good health to improve the immunization effect.
- Daily Care: Poodles' coats need to be brushed and trimmed regularly to maintain their nice curl and avoid tangles. It is also important to bathe and clean their ears regularly to keep the skin dry and clean and prevent ear infections. In addition, the hair around the eyes should be trimmed regularly to avoid stinging the eyes.
- Exercise Training: Poodles need a moderate amount of exercise to stay fit and burn off energy. You can take them out for a walk for about 40 minutes a day and train them to follow along during the walk to enhance interaction and trust. Basic training such as sit, handshake and down training as well as advanced training such as food refusal training, command memory training and socialization training can also be carried out.
VI. Common Health Problems
- Although the Poodle is a relatively healthy breed of dog, they can face some common health problems. These health problems include eye problems (e.g. keratitis, cataracts, retinal detachment, etc.), skin problems (e.g. dermatitis, itchiness, etc.), joint problems (e.g. dislocation of the knee, hip dysplasia, etc.), oral problems (e.g. dental calculus, gingivitis, etc.), and hereditary diseases (e.g. corneal dysplasia, kidney problems, heart disease, etc.). In order to prevent these health problems from occurring, owners need to take their dogs to the veterinarian for regular checkups and care and take the proper precautions.
To summarize, the Poodle is an intelligent, cute and easy-to-train dog breed. With enough love and care from their owners, they can maintain a healthy and happy life.
